SUMMARY:Social Security\, Disability\, and Equity: New Research and What It Means for Policy
DESCRIPTION:April is National Social Security Month\, a perfect time to examine new research exploring the experiences of benefits specialists who assist claimants to obtain and maintain Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Join the authors of a new report\, DREDF and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) for a timely conversation designed for advocates\, policymakers\, journalists\, and community members. \n  \nThis webinar will connect research findings to real-world policy debates. The study’s authors will break down key insights\, highlight worsening systemic barriers\, and outline what is at stake for equity and economic security. The discussion will focus on: \n  \n– How key findings from the research connect to current policy conversations affecting the disability community \n  \n– The implications disabled people who rely on Medicaid through SSI and SSDI. The increasing barriers to maintaining steady enrollment in SSI or SSDI benefits could lead to loss of critical healthcare services\, including home and community-based services. \n  \n– How the chaos at SSA could intersect with new requirements imposed on Medicaid beneficiaries under the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” or HR 1. \n  \n– The significance of the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act \n  \n– How we can collectively push for a more inclusive Social Security system \n  \nPresenters: \n  \n– Katie Savin (they/them) – Asst. Prof\, School of Social Work\, California State University\, Sacramento \n  \n– Callie Freitag (she/her) – Asst. SUMMARY:Strategic Complaint Drafting: Setting the Table Before You File
DESCRIPTION:The complaint does more than start a case\, it shapes the litigation that follows. This training hosted by CWLC and Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) focuses on strategic decisions lawyers should make before filing\, to position a case for success from the outset. We will cover some basic considerations such as how to identify the right defendants\, when and how to use Doe defendants\, and whether Doe plaintiffs may be appropriate in sensitive cases. The session will explore creative and strategic causes of action\, how many and which claims to plead (and when less may be more)\, and how to plan for amending complaints. The training will also address key procedural considerations that often determine whether a case survives early challenges. \n  \nPresenters: \n-Nora Cassidy\, Worker Protection Attorney\, Oakland City Attorney’s Office \n-Lois Thompson\, Retired Litigation Partner\, Proskauer Rose LLP \n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: Registration Link \n  \nIf you need an accommodation or service to fully participate\, please contact Jinny Kim at jkim@dredf.org or (510) 644-2555 ext. 5251 as soon as possible. \n  \n*MCLE: 1 General Credit
