SUMMARY:Revolutionary Love Day
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary love takes many forms\, from intimate love to community care to movements for self-determination. \n  \nJoin CIL and DREDF for an evening centering revolutionary love\, including: \n  \n– A special Bay Area community screening of the film Patrice: The Movie\, a new documentary rom-com all about the next phase of marriage equality: disability.\n– A panel discussion: How Our Struggles are Connected: Marriage Equality\, Protecting Section 504 (the Rehabilitation Act)\, Disability & LGBTQ+ Rights (with a focus on trans rights). \n  \nThis community film screening and panel discussion comes at a pivotal time\, where people with disabilities still do not have marriage equality; where there are renewed threats to marriage equality for LGBTQIA+ people\, and where there are emerging attacks on our trans\, non-binary and genderqueer siblings weaponizing the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act–the landmark disability rights that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. \n  \nAccess: The Ed Roberts Campus is a wheelchair accessible space above Ashby BART. Masks will be required and KN95 masks will be available. Light dinner and movie snacks provided in a separate space from the film screening. SUMMARY:Disability Community Briefing: What You Can Do to Stop the Attack on Section 504
DESCRIPTION:In September 2024\, a group of 17 states filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government called Texas v. Becerra. The lawsuit asks the court to get rid of Section 504 and its regulations. Section 504 is a major civil rights law for people with disabilities. Section 504 makes sure that people with disabilities are treated fairly and included at school and at their doctors appointments. Losing Section 504 would be a devastating loss of major civil rights for the disability community. This community briefing will explain: \n  \n– What Section 504 is and why it is so important to the disability community \n– What the new Section 504 regulations say and why they are good for the disability community \n– What is currently happening in the Texas v. Becerra lawsuit \n– What community members can do to help stop the attack on Section 504 \n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: Registration Link

SUMMARY:Unlocking Potential: Social Housing as a Catalyst for Accessible\, Affordable Living
DESCRIPTION:Join the Community Living Policy Center and Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF)‘s Mary Lou Breslin\, Hanneke van Deursen\, and Morgan Tweed for this exciting and timely webinar exploring the burgeoning movement for social housing in the United States and the untapped opportunities it presents to increase permanent\, affordable\, accessible housing for disabled renters. Social housing embodies the growing view that private\, for-profit housing development has failed to meet the nation’s growing affordable housing crisis. Shielded from the market\, rent-stabilized\, and sustainable\, social housing holds the potential to help solve the housing shortage for renters with diverse incomes\, including very low-income disabled people. \n  \nThe webinar will: \n  \n• Summarize the policies that have caused the current affordable\, accessible housing crisis in the US \n• Present an overview of the origins of social housing and how states and locales embrace the model \n• Introduce lessons from social housing in the Netherlands \n• Explain why and how social housing developers should fully incorporate principles of universal\, inclusive design and accessibility features into new social housing construction \n• Outline actions disability advocates can take to unlock the potential of social housing \n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: Registration Link

Up to 85% of youth in juvenile detention facilities have a disability\, yet only 37% of them receive special education services. \n  \nWithin the disability population\, people of color experience the greatest disparity. In order to serve our most vulnerable populations\, systems of care must address the multi-faceted barriers faced by people of color with disabilities. \n  \nJoin public and nonprofit leaders\, advocates\, parents\, students\, and the larger community in EXPLORING DISABILITY AND RACIAL EQUITY and DISCOVERING how we can ADVANCE JUSTICE within the education\, healthcare\, and justice systems.\n  \nThrough this FREE event\, participants will discover the importance of integrating disability and racial equity into their community work\, with insights from nationally-recognized disability and racial justice advocate Yomi Young. Attendees will also have the opportunity to join one of three sessions to learn how disability and racial disparities impact outcomes in the education\, health\, and justice systems\, as well as find solutions and best practices for promoting better access and support. \n  \nTogether\, we will examine how systemic practices affect members of the disability community and communities of color\, as well as unlock tangible steps we can take to create more just and equitable systems of care. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Yomi Young is a writer\, public speaker\, consultant\, trainer\, activist and self-described disability justice dreamer who organizes at the intersection of disability\, climate justice and health equity. She works full-time in healthcare as an ethics and compliance manager\, ensuring patients with disabilities receive quality care. \n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: Registration Link

SUMMARY:Patrice: The Movie
DESCRIPTION:All screenings of this film will be presented with open captions. \n  \nPatrice: The Movie shines a light on a remarkable crusader for disability rights\, confronting systemic failures while foregrounding joy through the energy of Patrice Jetter and her friends. \n  \nMeet Patrice Jetter\, a beloved school crossing guard in her New Jersey town. She carries herself with uncommon optimism and vigour despite\, as a disabled person\, constantly having to navigate a world that was not built with her in mind. She has a passion for figure skating\, model trains\, and making art of all kinds. \n  \nShe’s planning to finally get married to her partner Garry\, who is a wheelchair user. They come to learn that U.S. law has an unexpected penalty: when two people receiving Social Security disability benefits or Medicaid want to get married or even move in together\, their financial support is cut. Patrice and Garry fight to stay together in a system designed to keep them apart. \n  \nFilmmaker Ted Passon has known Patrice for 20 years\, witnessing both her creativity and her battles against government bureaucracy. For Patrice: The Movie\, he works closely with an all- star group of collaborators including disabled team members: producer Kyla Harris (We Might Regret This)\, executive producer and sound designer James LeBrecht (Crip Camp)\, composer Molly Joyce\, and others. \n  \nThe film is largely observational\, but it does include playful theatrical sequences in which Patrice recreates memories\, playing herself alongside a cast of children. She co-wrote the scenes and designed the sets. The film strikes a well-judged balance between confronting systemic failures and foregrounding joy through the energy of Patrice and her friends. It’s a vital call to action that leads with care and love.

SUMMARY:No Protest Without Us: Tips and Tools for Protestors with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:The disability rights movement has a history of using radical and effective protest tactics to achieve lasting change\, and disabled people have been and continue to be an essential part of all civil rights movements. Actions such as the ‘Capitol Crawl’ and Section 504 Sit-ins illustrate the importance of including people with disabilities in protest efforts of all kinds. \n  \nThis webinar will outline what to expect as a protestor with a disability before and throughout a protest\, as well as during potential police interactions. Longtime disability justice activist\, Anita Cameron\, and Cop City protestor and jail support organizer Adele MacLean\, will share stories and wisdom from their many years of direct action. The webinar will also include information for organizers to use while planning accessible protests. This training is meant to help disabled protestors understand their rights and best practices while participating in an action – as well as ideas for organizers to make protests more accessible – and is not a substitute for legal advice. \n  \nDREDF\, DLU and CLDC have developed a Pocket Guide for Protesting While Disabled\, and a comprehensive Know Your Rights For Disabled Protestors Guide that will be released and made accessible on the DREDF\, DLU and CLDC websites by the webinar date. \n\n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: \n  \nRegistration Link

SUMMARY:What the Grants Pass Decision Means for People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:On June 28\, 2024\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case called City of Grants Pass\, Oregon v. Johnson (“Grants Pass”) that fining and jailing people experiencing homelessness for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go does not violate the cruel and unusual punishments clause of the constitution. The decision has given states and local governments the go ahead to make criminalization their primary\, front-line response to homelessness and has had devastating effects on the civil rights of thousands of unhoused people across the United States. \n  \nThis webinar will: \n· Provide an overview of the Grants Pass case and the disability-related “friend of the court” briefs filed in the case; \n· Explain why people with disabilities are particularly at-risk of harm due to the increased criminalization of homelessness; \n· Explore the relationship between the Grants Pass case\, CARE Courts/civil commitments\, and efforts to increase the institutionalization of disabled people; \n· Critique the role of law enforcement and judicial authorities in responding to homelessness; and \n· Provide an overview of advocacy tools and strategic thinking regarding potential next steps in advocacy. \n\n  \nYou must register in advance for this training: \n  \nRegistration Link
