Today, DREDF, CREEC, and the law firm King & Spalding LLP as pro bono counsel filed a complaint against the State of California alleging that the Del Norte County Unified School District has failed to provide equal educational opportunities to disabled students in the district as required by the Constitution of the state of California and that the State must step in.

Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Marriage Penalty

The "Disabled Adult Child" or DAC benefit is a Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefit. It is a "secondary" benefit, meaning it is based on another person's work record (in this case, the parent of the beneficiary). A DAC beneficiary must be a dependent "adult child" with a qualifying disability that began before age 22. Recipients must be unable to engage in "substantial gainful activity" due to their disability. There are about 1.1 million DAC recipients. [...]

2024 DREDF Arlene Mayerson Internship

DREDF's comments highlight some especially strong advocacy positions on accessible medical equipment, the scope of who should be included as a person with a disability for nondiscrimination purposes, and the relationship between Section 504 and Section 1557, the nondiscrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act.
