Proposed Settlement Notice: Medi-Cal Accessibility Lawsuit for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons

DREDF, along with our co-counsel at Disability Rights California and Disability Rights Advocates, brought a class action lawsuit against the Department of Health Care Services in Hinkle v Baass, and now a settlement is being proposed. If you are a blind or visually impaired person who receives or wants to apply for Medi-Cal services, please read the information below and this Notice of Class Action (PDF) as it may affect your rights.

Important Information for Blind or Visually Impaired Individuals about Medi-Cal

The California Department of Health Care Services is entering into a settlement agreement. Under the settlement, DHCS has agreed to a plan for how blind and visually impaired people who receive or are eligible for Medi-Cal services can get their Medi-Cal information in different ways than print. A court will review this agreement.

The website at disabilityrightsca.org/HinklevBaassSettlement has more information on your rights as someone who could be affected by the settlement. If you are unable to visit the website you may call (833) 930-2486 to get more information. Please visit the website or call as soon as you can if you want to give the court your opinion of the settlement agreement. The deadline for giving the court your opinion is May 9, 2025.
