Disability Leaders and Community to Gather for 2nd Annual CDLA Day of Action at the State Capitol

For Immediate Release:
April 20, 2026

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Disability Leadership Alliance (The Alliance) is excited to host the second-annual Day of Action at the Capitol on May 26th. All are welcome to join us on the Capitol West Steps as we rally for disability rights and celebrate disability pride and power. The event also includes a resource fair, advocates and performers, and, new this year, dedicated time for the public to engage directly with members of the California State Legislature. Nothing about us, without us!

After releasing State of the State: California Disability Policy in 2024, The Alliance formed to build cross-disability collaboration, solidarity, and political power to influence and improve policies for disabled people in California. The group of disability and Deaf-led organizations of The Alliance is working collaboratively on this Day of Action in recognition that now more than ever, it’s crucial that the disability community join together in community and solidarity.

On this Day of Action, we will uplift these key priorities:

Some priority issues for the day include:

  • Honor the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and protect funding for disabled students
  • Protect and enforce civil rights
  • Protect language rights, physical access, and access to health and mental health care, education, and employment
  • Defend and support disabled people targeted by government attacks, including immigrants and LGBTQIA+ individuals
  • Improve physical, digital, and communication accessibility
  • Improve education outcomes and language access for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing (ASL & English)
  • Support voluntary, community-based, peer led mental health services and supports
  • Include Certified Peers alongside navigators to assist with Medi-Cal eligibility, enrollment, and retention
  • Oppose forced mental health treatment, unnecessary interactions with law enforcement, incarceration, or institutionalization
  • Oppose state cuts to health care and HCBS for all communities
  • Oppose health care cuts for immigrants
  • End the criminalization of people with disabilities

When: Tuesday, May 26th, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm PST
Where: 1315 10th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814

The Alliance invites community members, public officials, and members of the press to join us in this important day of action at our state’s Capitol.
