ASAP: Support SB 1376 for full access to Uber and Lyft

To California disability advocates:

Just about everyone knows that Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft nearly always fail to provide wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs).

But far too few of us know that California Senator Jerry Hill has a bill to change that!

SB 1376 would require the California Public Utilities Commission, the body with authority over TNCs, to develop regulations by January of 2020 with many specific disability access requirements for TNCs, including to provide WAV service or pay into a fund that will do so. See the SB 1376 Fact Sheet.

Disability groups working together on this bill include Disability Rights California; Disability Rights Advocates; independent living centers in Berkeley, San Francisco, and San Mateo; Senior & Disability Action, and the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund. We need to strengthen the support for SB 1376 state-wide!

VERY SOON, SB 1376 will be heard in two Committees:

On June 20 (Wednesday morning), SB 1376 will be heard in the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance. It may be too late for letters, but now is the perfect time to make calls to that Committee and its members. See targeted staff phone numbers below.

Sample statement: "I'm calling to urge you to vote yes on SB 1376, because Californians with disabilities deserve to use Uber and Lyft like anyone else!"

And please come to the hearing to voice your support!

On June 25 (Monday afternoon), SB 1376 will be heard in the Assembly Transportation Committee. Please email your notes & letters of support to the Committee ASAP. To email the Committee, saying why this issue is so important, address your note to:

I am writing to ask that you support SB 1376 as amended on June 12, 2018. This bill is of the utmost importance to Californians who use wheelchairs and scooters due to our disabilities. We deserve access to services like Uber and Lyft, just like everyone else!
