Dear Director Walensky,

The undersigned organizations write in response to your comments on Friday, January 7th, 2022.

Together we represent millions of people with disabilities, patients, and people with chronic illnesses across the United States, and we are extremely concerned by your comments. People with disabilities and pre-existing conditions have been disproportionately killed by COVID-19. This is particularly true for those who live in congregate settings. Each of these deaths is a devastating loss to families, friends and to our broader communities. Your comments about the results of a research study referred to the fact that a disproportionate number of deaths due to COVID-19 occurred among "people who were unwell to begin with" as "encouraging news". Weunderstand you were speaking about a research study and that segments of your remarks were cut by ABC from the aired interview. Stop Blaming Gun Violence on Mental Illness

We grieve with all those harmed by recent mass shootings in Dayton, El Paso, and Gilroy. 

DREDF unequivocally rejects attempts to scapegoat mental illness in all areas – including gun violence – and stands in solidarity with our friends, colleagues, and allies who seek real, effective policy solutions to racism, xenophobia, mental health stigma, and mass murder.

We are incredibly pleased to announce that Lawrence Carter-Long is joining DREDF as our new Communications Director and that he will be heading up our newly-reignited Disability and Media Alliance Project (D-MAP). His 6 years at the National Council on Disability (NCD) as Public Affairs Specialist and decades of thoughtful and creative disability cultural critique equip him to be the media advocacy leader DREDF -- and the cross-disability communities -- need right now.

BERKELEY, CA – September 6, 2016 Hulu, LLC (Hulu) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the nation's premier civil rights organization of, by, and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, represented by Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF), and Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center (CREEC), entered into a settlement agreement for Hulu to provide 100 percent closed captions of its full-length English and Spanish content by September 2017.

NAD and Gogo Agree to Make Closed Captions Available on In-Flight Entertainment Systems

Deaf and hard of hearing airline passengers will soon have closed captioned, on-demand in-flight entertainment videos. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), a non-profit civil rights organization of, by, and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and Gogo LLC, the global leader in providing broadband connectivity solutions and wireless entertainment to the aviation industry, have reached a historic agreement for Gogo to make closed captioning available for 100 percent of programming content sourced by Gogo and streamed through its on-demand in-flight entertainment service, Gogo Vision.

Amazon Agrees to Caption Amazon Video By December 31, 2016

"Amazon's resolve to make its online offerings accessible to people who are deaf and hard of hearing should serve as an example for streaming entertainment providers who refuse to close caption their far more limited catalogs," said Arlene Mayerson, DREDF's Directing Attorney, regarding the case that continues progress begun through agreements with Netflix and Apple.

For more than 20 years, Apple has been committed to accessibility across its products and services. Apple has led the industry in developing tools for networks and studios to easily deliver their content with top–quality closed captioning, which works seamlessly across various devices. Nearly all new movies and TV shows in iTunes already offer closed captioning, and by March 2014 the vast majority of the iTunes catalog will offer closed captioning.
