California Legislation on Public Meeting Remote Access

Zoom meeting open on a laptop, green plant along the sideSince the official end of the public health emergency, disabled people who serve on advisory boards and committees across the state are now required to attend meetings in person. People with disabilities who remain vulnerable to severe effects from COVID-19, RSV, and other infectious diseases are being forced to skip meetings or resign from their positions altogether. Two bills in Sacramento would make it easier for disabled people to serve on advisory boards and committees and protect their health by participating remotely.

One bill, AB 817, would permit virtual participation by members of local advisory boards and commissions. A second bill, SB 544, would allow members of state boards and commissions to participate remotely without having to list their private addresses or provide public access to their homes.

Any individual or organization can set up a free account with the position letter portal to submit a letter or statement about a bill in the California Legislature. DREDF sent a letter of support for AB 817 and a letter of support on SB 544. Unfortunately, AB 817 is not moving, but SB 544 is.

DREDF is also working on other advocacy to ensure that disabled members of state and local advisory boards and commissions can participate remotely as a reasonable accommodation. Please reach out to DREDF if you are personally affected by these issues.
