What is Prejudice as it Relates to Disability Anti-Discrimination Law?

David Ruebain* Introduction My background and interest in disabled people’s rights stems from the fact that I was born with an impairment that affects my mobility and dexterity. Like all of us, I have a number of characteristics and identities, but overwhelmingly my identity as a disabled person has defined my relationship with the world and its relationship with me. From the anxiety and terror that my family experienced shortly before my birth upon being told by doctors that I was disabled, to my own [...] ...

The Right to Community Integration for People with Disabilities Under United States and International Law

By Eric Rosenthal and Arlene Kanter [1] Introduction In many countries of the world today, people with disabilities are deprived of their rights and liberties, excluded from society, and blamed for many of society’s most unsolvable problems, such as crime and homelessness. People with disabilities, particularly people with mental disabilities, may be involuntarily locked away in institutions, subjected to abuse and neglect, and deprived of their right to live as equal citizens in the community. [...] ...

Op-Ed: Assisted suicide would be fraught with problems and abuses

DREDF Urges CA Governor to Veto Bill Eliminating Safeguards on Physician Assisted Suicide SB 380

September 22, 2021 Senate Bill 380, which would roll back important protections for individuals with disabilities who are considering using an aid-in-dying drug for the purpose of ending their life. Assisted suicide is not about choice when people with disabilities lack access to appropriate medical care. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed long standing disparities in our health care delivery system as we witnessed disproportionate rates of infection and mortality among Black and Latine Californians, and throughout our senior and disability communities.
